ROSIE TEBOGO MOTENE

Rosie Motene is an award-winning actor, TV and radio presenter, TV and film producer. Rosie has also excelled as an author, voice-over artist, media trainer, global emcee and activist. Rosie is an accredited international laughter coach.

Rosie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Dramatic Arts (Honours) from the University of the Witwatersrand

TV Presenting

GOOD MORNING AFRICA:

This Pan-African lifestyle show, focusing on the African continent. Rosie was the co-anchor and field reporter and insert producer from 2013 to 2014.

INSTYLE:

South African magazine programme dealing with food, lifestyle, travel and entertainment.

STUDIO 53:

A lifestyle show, which dealt with the same elements but focusing on the African Continent. Rosie was the studio anchor person as well as the field reporter for five years running. In 2006, Rosie became one of the directors and producers for the show, a position she filled until 2010.

AFRICAN KALEIDOSCOPE:

The show shared the same appeal and ideas as Studio 53 but it is only aired on the Africa Channel, in the USA, Caribbean and the UK.

AFRICAN ICONS:

Rosie anchored the initial African Icons series on the Mzansi Magic channel.

TV Acting

GENERATIONS:

Rosie became a household name after landing a principal role on the SABC1 soap Generations, which she carried for five years.

Rosie played the role of a hard-nosed model agent set in South Africa.

Film Acting

HOTEL RWANDA:

Rosie’s debut on to the big screen was for the Oscar nominated Hotel Rwanda, where she played the role of the receptionist.

THE OTHER WOMAN:

Rosie played the lead in The Heartlands film, directed by Cindy Lee and lensed by Lance Gewer who lensed Tsotsi.

NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH:

Rosie played the lead actor alongside Jon Kani in his filmic adaptation of his theatrical piece.

Director and Producer

STUDIO 53:

Whilst working as a presenter on the television show Studio 53, Rosie was trained as a producer and director and produced inserts for the programme. Rosie was also been involved in securing trade exchange agreements for the show with Southern Sun Hotel Group and Arik Airlines.

JARRA:

Rosie was the associate producer for an M-Net production titled Jarra and aired on the M-Net and in Nigeria.

Doctors On Call:

South Africa’s new medical reality series on Mzansi Magic. Rosie is the Co-producer and one of the directors on the show.

Film

JESUS AND THE GIANT:

Rosie was an associate producer on the South Africa short film 'Jesus and the giant,' directed by Akin Omotoso. The film has played at many international film festivals, such as the Rotterdam Film Festival in 2009 and the Toronto Film Festival in 2008.

Feature Film

MAN ON GROUND:

Directed by Akin Omotoso. Rosie is the co-producer on this film about the Xenophobic violence that happened in South Africa in 2008. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2011. It also screened at the Dubai Film Festival in 2011, at the PAFF (Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles), the Berlinale Film Festival in 2012, Jozi Film Festival, the New York African Film Festival and the Durban International Film Festival. To date the film has won 14 awards both locally and abroad.

Radio

CHAIFM (Jewish community radio) :

Rosie had her own radio show titled: ‘In Your element with the Afro-Yiddish princess.’ The show dealt with all aspects of life from love to religion, health and dreams. The show aired Monday to Friday 09h00 to 12h00.

Rosie held the position of head of productions, programming and acquisitions at NTV Uganda. This position she was in charge of NTV Uganda and Spark TV productions respectively. She was in charge for conceptualizing, executing and producing 25 shows. She was responsible for 42 people from producers, video editors, programmers and Camera department

THE RISE OF THE AFRO-YIDDSH PRINCESS: INTER-RACIAL-INTERFAITH ADOPTION:

My mother was a domestic worker for a White Jewish family, who raised me as their own. My talk looks at the dynamics of a black child growing up in a white family during the apartheid era, dealing with a major identity crisis at an early age then finding my African identity and merging it with my faith. In 2011, I officially converted to Judaism. In 2013, I made the brave decision to move to Phokeng, Rustenburg and live with my biological family and work on our relationship.

KEEPING YOUR INNER FLAME ALIGHT: KNOW YOUR RIGHTS.

Whilst in University, I dated a boy who abused me emotionally, financially and then physically. My story is one of courage, education and learning what our rights are and making sure no one ever takes away our inner shine/strength. I received my training through POWA, I am the Vice-Chair of the organisation.

In 2013, I was assaulted in Botswana, my story and anguish which has followed, including him intimidating me and my witnesses, to bribe and lack of support from Botswana police. In 2015 Rosie made the choice to resign from her acting job on Zabalaza due to sexual harassment and the fact that the producers were not respecting her right to not want to perform semi-nude or perform any sexual acts. This has now created dialogue with channels and the SA guild of actors and them working on sexual harassment clauses on set.

MY KILI EXPERIENCE: POLE POLE, SLOWLY:

I was appointed the ambassador for UN Women to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, part of the Africa Unite campaign: To stop violence against women and girls in Africa. Rosie climbed Mt Kilimanjaro again in 2014 to rise awareness for The Tomorrow trust and the Kilimanjaro Initiative. The second attempt she reached Uhuru summit, despite falling ill and an hour and a half behind her group.

CONSULTANCY

Production:

Rosie is a television production consultant, advising production companies and networks on the following:

• Conceptualizing programmes for television. This includes writing proposals, pitching to clients and sourcing for finance.
• Training and building up a strong production team, from executive producer, producer, director and talent.
• Teaching the principles of casting.
• Executing the production flow: the three phases of production, fro pre-production, production and post-production

TV presenter training

Rosie offers extensive media and presenter training workshops. The workshops include voice and breathing techniques, how to stand and present yourself in front of the camera. The training includes techniques of mastering interviewing skills and how to pose certain issues and questions. Rosie also highlights what not to do in front of the camera and what the correct posture and sitting should be adhered to, as well as insight into the appropriate clothing to wear. Lastly, she also focuses on how to write questions for an interview, the structure of the interview, tactics to avoid when interviewing, etc.

Actors workshops

Rosie offers one on one or group training for aspiring and professional actors. The workshops vary from learning the basic breathing techniques, warm ups, character proposals, blocking of scenes. For the more revered actors, there is also focus on accents and the different levels of method acting

Executive media workshops

Rosie holds training workshop for corporate clients who seek help in presentation, how to handle media, interview skills and on camera etiquette. The workshops also include warm up techniques, posture, wardrobe, brand awareness and dealing with public speaking.

Public Status and awards

Rosie is regarded as one of South Africa's best dressed women and has been nominated and won many awards:

South African Style Awards:

In 2003, Rosie received the award for the most stylish media personality.

At the end of 2006, Rosie was rated amongst the top five best dressed women in South Africa.

Naledi Theatre Awards:

In 2003, Rosie received an award for her role in The Vagina Monologues.

Legends Awards Ceremony:

Rosie received the Life-time Achievement Award.

Rosie has graced the covers and pages of many South African and international magazines, including True Love, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Style, Joburg Style and Destiny Magazine, African Woman and Forbes Africa Magazine. In 2007, Rosie along with a number of other African personalities featured in the internationally acclaimed Vanity Fair Magazine in an issue dedicated to Africa.

Rosie is also a household name on the African Continent. In 2004 and 2005, she was the official Face of the, Namibian and Ugandan Fashion Weeks held in Windhoek, Namibia and Kampala, Uganda respectively.

In 2008 Rosie was nominated for the Shoprite/Checkers Woman of the Year Awards.

In 2008 Rosie was appointed as the brand ambassador for this leading jewelry brand, in conjunction with Ryk Neethling and the Dream Big campaign.

BMW:

From 2004 to 2008 Rosie was driven by BMW, via a sponsorship deal from JSN BMW in Bryanston. This made her the first non-sporting person and the first black woman to land such a deal.

FNB:

Rosie was the official representative for First National Bank's, Million-A-Month-Account show.

UNWomen:

Africa Unite campaign to end violence against women and children. Rosie was appointed as SA Ambassador to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

Charities

POWA:

Rosie completed the volunteer training and public awareness course through POWA (People Opposing Women Abuse) in 2003. Since then, Rosie has become actively involved in campaigning against women and child abuse in South Africa and in 2008 was appointed to the board. In 2010 Rosie became the Vice-Chairperson. Through her campaigns, Rosie has worked closely with Y-FM Open and Disclosure Campaign, Johannesburg Prison, Maudabee Prison in Springs and various schools and communities in and around South Africa. In 2004 Rosie was invited to the University of Cape Town to deliver a speech on abuse and ways of curbing it and she shared the podium with the Minster of Education, the Honourable, Ms. Naledi Pandor.

CHILDLINE GAUTENG:

Rosie became a key operator with the activities of Childline, Gauteng. In 2004, Rosie was appointed Chairperson, and worked closely with a strong management team in spearheading the activities of the organisation. She resigned as Chairperson in 2012.

THE TOMORROW TRUST:

An organisation which helps provide, under privileged children with the educational and business tools to create career paths for themselves. Rosie has joined this group and gives lifestyle and inspirational skills to the young girls and now sits on the board of trustees.

THE JOHANNESBURG CHILDREN’S HOME:

An umbrella organisation connected to Childline. Rosie sat on the board from 2004 to 2012.
